If there is one thing that is hard to stand, it’s mean people.  You know, those people who specifically seem to go out of their way to cause misery in the world.  You wonder, how hard is it to say please and thank you instead of demanding service?  Do you have to drive in the puddle and splash everyone on the sidewalk?  Sendthat nastygram? There are two key things to note when dealing with mean people:

 1. It’s not about you.  Some people may target you specifically because you’re young, you’re short, or you’re new to the game.  Most of what they do however has nothing to do with you.  When people are mean, it usually is due to their own insecurities.  They get a feeling of power by inconveniencing other people, or controlling their emotions (i.e. making them mad). 

2. People are going to be who they want to be, and you can’t change them.  A person has to want to change themselves.  A lot of mean people aren’t content with how they act, but they don’t know of another way to interact with the world to get the results that they want.  A mean person gains control over their life by manipulating the emotions of others.  The truth is that the only person that has control over your emotions is you.  Nothing bothers a mean person more than refusing to become upset over their actions.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t call them out on the inappropriateness of what they said (which they are then likely to deny – but they still hear you), but not getting upset is a win for you, and a clear loss for them.
